Move Beyond Assembly, Build Local Supply Chain- Mahama to Automakers

President John Dramani Mahama has challenged players in Ghana’s automotive industry to move beyond importing parts for assembly to building a fully integrated local supply chain.

Commissioning the Phase III expansion of the Zonda Tec Ghana vehicle assembly plant in Tema on Tuesday, the President said the future of the industry depends on Ghanaian businesses producing components locally.

“Our automotive sector must evolve from assembling vehicles with imported parts to developing a fully integrated local supply chain,” President Mahama said, urging investment in batteries, tyres, wiring systems, seats, glass, plastics and metal components.

The expanded facility, with an annual production capacity of 12,000 vehicles, is expected to boost local manufacturing, create jobs, and anchor the Government’s industrial transformation agenda.

President Mahama said the government will prioritise affordable, long-term vehicle financing to drive demand for Made-in-Ghana vehicles, particularly for public sector workers and the middle class.

He noted that Ghana’s lithium and other mineral resources, coupled with renewable energy potential, position the country to link mining to battery production, vehicle manufacturing and exports – creating a complete automotive ecosystem.

The commissioning, he said, signals the government’s commitment to local production, skills development and value addition as pillars of economic reset.
