EPA Shuts Down Empire Cement Over Severe Air Pollution
The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has issued an immediate shutdown notice to Empire Cement Ghana Limited following investigations into public complaints concerning severe air pollution.
According to the Authority, the investigation into the facility’s operations revealed sustained particulate and gaseous emissions and failure to submit required quarterly environmental monitoring returns.
It was also cited for failure to install appropriate modern pollution control systems.
The facility has therefore been directed to halt all operations until it complies with national environmental standards, addresses impacts on affected communities, and obtains written clearance from the EPA.
The EPA stressed that environmental compliance is not optional, noting that protecting public health and the environment requires accountability, responsible industrial practices and strict adherence to regulatory requirements.
