Mahama to Break Ground For Accra-Kumasi Expressway Before Christmas

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to break ground for the commencement of construction of the long-awaited Accra-Kumasi Expressway.

He made the announcement after the Ghana Armed Forces handed over the cleared Right-of-Way for the 198.7-kilometre, six-lane expressway, paving the way for construction to begin.

“For 70 years, our two largest cities have been connected by a single carriageway. This is going to change,” President Mahama said.

The project comprises a new controlled-access expressway corridor of approximately 198.7 kilometres between Ablekuma in Accra and Sawua in Kumasi.

Of the total, 175.6km will be the newly constructed expressway mainline, while 23.1km will involve upgrading existing connector roads at the Accra and Kumasi ends to integrate the new route with the existing network.

The mainline is designed as a Class A facility with three-lane dual carriageways on a 36.0-metre right-of-way and a design speed of 120 km/h.

The connector roads are Class B facilities with a design speed of 60 km/h, made up of a 17.9km Accra Connector Road and a 5.2km Kumasi Connector Road.

The engineering scope includes eight grade-separated interchanges to be constructed near Ablekuma New Town, Adeiso, Asamankese, Akim Oda, Ofoase, Asante Ofoase, Lake Bosomtwe and Sewua Junction on Lake Road, nine at-grade intersections, eleven vehicular overpasses, fifty-five mainline bridges, 280 reinforced concrete box culverts, 56 overpasses and underpasses, four service areas, eight toll locations, one operations centre with two monitoring sub-centres, three maintenance depots, one fire station, road safety systems, and civil and electromechanical works for an intelligent transport system.
