Mahama Orders Subcontract Award to GAF Engineers in Accra–Kumasi Expressway Project

The President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, has directed the Ministry of Roads and Highways to engage the GAF Engineers as a major subcontractor for the construction of the Accra–Kumasi Expressway.

He made this known at a ceremony held at Kwaso in the Ashanti Region on Monday, 14 September 2026, during the handover and formal presentation of the report on the successful completion of the expressway’s right-of-way clearing exercise by the GAF Engineers to the Ministry of Roads and Highways.

President Mahama commended the Engineers for completing the 175.6-kilometre right-of-way clearing assignment in 19 weeks, one week ahead of the stipulated 20-week deadline.

The President further tasked the GAF with undertaking right-of-way clearing for the proposed Greater Accra Orbital Highway and the nationwide installation of steel bridges as part of efforts to expand the Armed Forces’ contribution to national infrastructure development.

President Mahama said the government had secured $2 billion to finance the Accra–Kumasi Expressway, indicating it intends to begin main construction work before the end of the year.

The new expressway will form part of a broader national transport network linking major highways and orbital roads to improve the movement of goods and passengers across the country.

The Accra–Kumasi Expressway is expected to cover about 198.7 kilometres. It will provide a modern six-lane controlled-access highway linking Ghana’s two major economic centres, from Ablekuma in Accra to Sewua in the Ashanti Region.

The project scope will include 11 vehicular overpasses, 4 service areas, 3 maintenance depots, an operations centre with 2 monitoring sub-centres, and a fire station, among others.
