Ghana to Host High-Level Side Event On Reparatory Justice At 81st UN General Assembly

Ghana is set to host a high-level side event on reparatory justice in New York on September 23, during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The event follows the historic UN General Assembly Resolution (A/RES/80/250), championed by a coalition of the African Union (AU), CARICOM and the African Diaspora, which declared the enslavement of Africans the gravest crime against humanity.

It was against this backdrop that Ghana convened the extraordinary Next Steps Conference in Accra in June this year, described as a clarion call to action that brought together visionaries, scholars and champions of justice.

Following the Accra Conference, Ghana has established three key mechanisms: a High-Level Advisory Council on Reparatory Justice, a Global Experts Panel on the Restitution of Cultural Heritage, and a Global Legal Panel on Reparatory Justice.

The government said this marks the beginning of a new chapter in the collective journey towards reparatory justice.

“Our journey, therefore, does not end here. Ghana, the birthplace of our collective struggle, will host a high-level side event in New York during the 81st United Nations General Assembly Session, this 23rd September, to receive progress reports from our established Panels,” the statement said.

The side event is described as a symbolic rebirth and an invitation for the world to bear witness to progress and the momentum of the cause.

“As we gather under the auspices of the United Nations, under the watchful gaze of the international community, we seek not only to report on our achievements but to catalyse a global dialogue,” it added.

Ghana urged all nations to join the effort and stand in solidarity as it continues to lead the charge for justice, restitution and dignity for Africa and people of African descent worldwide.
