Asantehemaa’s Reign and Ghana’s First Female Veep Not a Coincidence – Female Govt Officials

Female government officials have described the reign of Nana Yaa Akyaa II, Asantehemaa, as a defining moment rather than a coincidence.

During a visit to the Manhyia Palace on September 14, 2026, the delegation referenced the election of the country’s first female Vice President, H.E. Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, as well as the appointment of several women to key government positions.

They described it as a call from the ancestors for close partnership and unity among the female leadership.

“This is more than coincidence; it is a call from the ancestors for close partnership and unity among the female leadership of our nation. We have every confidence that you will be the unifier you have already shown yourself to be,” they said in a speech read by Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, Deputy Chief of Staff at the Presidency.

They added that they intend to tap into the wisdom of Her Majesty in governance to help meet the expectations of Ghanaians, particularly women and children.

The delegation included Nana Yaa Jantuah, Presidential Aide; Rita Odeley Sowah, Deputy Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs; Hajia Shamima Muslim, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson; and Matilda Asare Asiedu, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

Also present were Pamela Graham, Auditor-General; Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong, Chief Fire Officer; COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department; Obuobia Darko-Opoku, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund; Getrude Emefa Donkor, CEO of Ghana Gold Board Jewellery; Felicia Adjei, Kintampo South MP; and Faustilove Appiah Kannin, Obuasi West MCE.

The visit was to extend their goodwill and congratulatory message to the Asantehemaa.
