Mahama Swears In Independent Fiscal Council To Strengthen Economy

President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in a new Independent Fiscal Council to strengthen Ghana’s economy and restore public financial discipline.

The five-member independent body was established under the Public Financial Management (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1136) and is mandated to scrutinise government spending, monitor debt sustainability and ensure transparency in public resource management.

Swearing in the members, President Mahama said fiscal responsibility must not be regarded merely as a statutory requirement but as a moral obligation to present and future generations.

He urged the Council to act based on evidence and the national interest, free from political bias.

Members of the Council are Dr Emmanuel Oteng Kumah, an International Economic Consultant who will serve as Chair, Dr Henry Kofi Wampah, former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Prof. Patrick Opoku Asuming of the University of Ghana Business School, Leslie Dwight Mensah, a Think Tank Representative, and J. Kweku Bedu-Addo, a Public Policy Expert.
