Perception that Asantes Were Not Educated Inspired My Scholarship Drive – Otumfuo

The Occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has revealed the inspiration behind his landmark scholarship scheme, one of the signature initiatives for which his foundation is recognised globally.
Addressing attendees at the Akwasidae celebration in the United States of America on Sunday, August 30, 2026, the Asantehene recalled that improving educational opportunities was the first priority that demanded his attention upon ascending the throne.
At the time, he noted, a pervasive negative perception existed across the country regarding educational standards and attainment within Asanteman.
“I noticed education was key.”
“Before my ascension, there was a perception that Asantes were not educated. It burdened my heart, so I decided to address it.”
Starting with a seed fund and backed by contributions from traditional authorities, Otumfuo established a scheme to provide financial support and scholarships to children from underprivileged backgrounds.
Through decades of sustained investment, the he affirmed that the initiative has successfully transformed the educational landscape.
“I can boldly state today that we have produced numerous graduates and professionals across Asanteman,” the King stated.
The Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation (OOTIIF) has since offered scholarships to millions of Asantes and Ghanaians across the country.
