Education Minister Pushes for Stronger Ghana-China Collaboration to Expand STEM Education

The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has called for stronger collaboration between Ghana and China to expand access to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education at all levels.

He said greater cooperation in STEM and emerging technologies would help equip Ghanaian learners with the skills needed to meet the demands of the future.

Hon. Iddrisu made the call when the newly appointed Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Cong Song, paid a working visit to him.

He expressed appreciation to the Government of China for its continued support to Ghana’s education sector, including the establishment of Confucius Institutes in some Ghanaian universities, which he said had contributed to strengthening educational and cultural ties between the two countries.

The Minister also thanked China for the US$30 million grant to the Government of Ghana, which will support the establishment of the University of Science and Technology in Damongo, with a focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies.

He expressed hope that Ambassador Cong Song’s tenure would further strengthen the longstanding bilateral relationship between Ghana and China, particularly in education and technology, adding that Ghana looks forward to expanding the partnership beyond existing interventions to ensure that learners at every level have opportunities to acquire practical STEM and digital skills.

Ambassador Cong Song, on his part, expressed China’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Ghana and strengthening partnerships that contribute to the country’s development, particularly in education, science and technology.
