One Ghanaian Returnee Dies at KIA After Evacuation Flight from South Africa

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the death of one Ghanaian evacuee shortly after arrival at the Kotoka International Airport on Friday evening.
In a press release issued on Friday, the Ministry said the deceased was among 50 Ghanaians who arrived at 5:50pm aboard an Air Tanzania flight from South Africa as part of a government evacuation exercise.
According to the Ministry, the returnee’s health condition began to deteriorate about 30 minutes before the flight touched down in Accra, based on reports from other passengers.
“A medical emergency team that was on standby at the airport to receive him attended to him upon arrival but regrettably the deceased passed away and was confirmed dead by doctors at 6:55pm after all attempts failed,” the statement said.
The Ministry noted that it is currently undertaking the formalities of informing the family of the deceased. The remains have been deposited at the Police Hospital for autopsy.
It added that further updates will be provided after formal engagement with the bereaved family.
The evacuation forms part of government’s ongoing efforts to assist Ghanaians abroad. The circumstances surrounding the evacuation from South Africa were not detailed in the release.
