Asantehene Spares Baworohene From Destoolment On Condition

The Occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has spared Nana Sarfo Agyemang, Baworohene, from destoolment after he dishonestly invoked the Great Oath to lay claim to the Baworo stool.
He had challenged Oheneyere Poa Kwabi Agyemang, stating that he was the rightful heir to the stool, and added that he was related by blood to Oheneyere.
Otumfuo decided to spare him after a member of the Kumasi Traditional Council assisted him in presenting his plea on August 10, 2026.
History
Digging into history, Otumfuo recounted that Poa Kwabi, who would later marry the Asantehene, migrated alongside her family of the Bretuo clan from Adansi Ahensan to Dompoase, where they met the family of Nana Sarfo Agyemang, the current Baworohene, and forged lifelong ties.
Otumfuo affirmed that they were of the same clan but not related by blood.
In the process of time, when Poa Kwabi was pregnant, she decided to visit her family in Juaben.
On her return, when she got to a place called Kokyereko, she went into labour and beseeched the chief of the land for a better place to deliver. However, she was denied, resulting in her delivering under an iconic tree.
When this was reported to the Asantehene, he raided the community, killed everyone and allotted it to his wife.
“Since she gave birth there, it was said about the place, ‘Waworo awo’ which has now become Baworo,” His Majesty recounted, noting that the child was named Kwabena Owusu Afriyie.
In the process of time, Oheneyere Poa decided to make her son Baworohene. However, he was quite young for the stool and thereby sought the permission of her husband to give the stool to Kwame Sarfo, who became known as Kwame Agyemang, an ancestor of the current Baworohene who migrated from Adansi Ayaase.
Judgement
With this said, Otumfuo affirmed that Oheneyere and Baworohene are not related.
“The stool is the Owusu Afriyie stool, not the Sarfo Agyemang stool. You are not related, but you are of the same clan. Your relationship was not defined because of the peace that existed between the two. But with the misunderstanding that arose, there was the need to set the record straight,” Otumfuo affirmed.
Otumfuo also stated that Baworo cannot have two family heads, and annulled the position of the family head of the Baworohene.
“The family head of Oheneyere is the legitimate family head of the royal family.”
Annulled Stools
The Asantehene also annulled all stools created by Baworohene, including the Obaapanin stool and Gyaasehene stool.
“When the Obaapanin stool was created during the era of the former Oheneyere, at the time, I sent to ask her if she approved it and she gave an affirmative answer, so I left the issue. But I discerned it would create an issue in future, and here it comes.”
Submission
Otumfuo further gave Baworohene the option of serving only as caretaker of the stool, and to submit to the instructions of Oheneyere and the Abusuapanin.
“Either you accept these arrangements, or you get destooled,” Otumfuo proposed, with Baworohene deciding to accept the new arrangement.
