Condition Behind Baworohene’s Narrow Escape From Destoolment

Nana Sarfo Agyemang, the Baworohene, escaped complete destoolment on August 10, 2026, under a single, non-negotiable term after he dishonestly invoked the Great Oath.

The ultimate terms delivered by the Asantehene stripped the Baworohene of his substantive traditional authority, converting his status to that of a conditional caretaker.

Under this binding arrangement, Nana Sarfo Agyemang must operate under the explicit directives of Oheneyere and the legitimate family head (Abusuapanin) of the royal house.

Otumfuo gave the chief a direct choice between accepting these governing boundaries or stepping down immediately, a condition the chief accepted following a plea for clemency assisted by a member of the Kumasi Traditional Council.

The enforcement of these conditions follows a dispute in which the Baworohene falsely invoked the Great Oath (Ntamkese) to claim ownership of the Baworo stool and assert a blood relationship with Oheneyere.

Clarifying the historical record, Otumfuo explained that while both lineages belong to the Bretuo clan, they share no biological relation.

The original settlement, derived from the phrase “Waworo awo” after Oheneyere gave birth under an iconic tree at Kokyereko, was gifted to her by the Asantehene, making the seat the Owusu Afriyie stool rather than the Sarfo Agyemang stool.

The Baworohene’s ancestor, Kwame Sarfo, had merely been entrusted with the seat temporarily because Oheneyere’s son was too young to rule.
