You Create Problems When You Take Sides in Chieftaincy Disputes- Asantehene to Police Officers

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, has identified that undue interference by some police officers in chieftaincy disputes tends to exacerbate issues.
The Monarch observes that some officers involve themselves in these issues, taking sides and thereby stoking tensions.
Otumfuo noted that these kinds of disputes pass through traditionally laid down processes to be resolved amicably.
“We are resolving Chieftaincy issues where we look at the lineage of people. Whether you have money or not, you should hail from the appropriate lineage. If you are from the appropriate lineage and it is confirmed that the family wants you to be the chief, we will give it to you. No one will be allowed to use his money to influence any chieftaincy title or create confusion in any village or community,” Otumfuo explained.
His Majesty said this method has guided the rectification of all mistakes in succession within his jurisdiction in the Ashanti, Ahafo and part of the Bono regions.
Otumfuo furthered that the efforts are derailed when law enforcement officers interfere to take sides.
“Some police get involved in Chieftaincy matters when it’s not necessary at all because I don’t see how a chief will be gazetted and a police commander will issue instructions to say ‘Don’t allow him to go there.’ You are supposed to give him the protection against whoever has not validly been nominated and enstooled, and so if you take sides, it creates problems also for the whole institution and creates problems for the police. These are issues that I feel must be raised while I’m here in front of the Police Management Board.”
Asantehene made these remarks during a visit to the Police Headquarters in Accra on January 6, 2026.
