Why Democracy Hub Is Presenting and Sponsoring Candidates in Council of State Elections
Pressure group Democracy Hub has announced plans to present and sponsor candidates in the upcoming Council of State Elections.
The regional elections will take place on February 11, 2025, at venues to be determined by the Commission.
Ahead of the opening of nominations, Democracy Hub says it will present candidates for the elections, calling the move a “critical” step in their advocacy for constitutional reform including outlawing the Council.
“As many of you know, Democracy Hub has consistently championed bold reforms to reshape our governance structures. Critical in our proposals for constitutional remaking is the abolition of the Council of State a body we believe has become ineffective in fulfilling its advisory role to the Presidency and the broader machinery of governance.”
It explained that the step is aimed at ensuring that the Council does not obstruct progress toward achieving its abolition.
“While we stand firm in our call for the Council’s abolition, we also understand that its current role in the constitutional amendment process cannot be overlooked. By law, all bills seeking to amend the Constitution must first be referred to the Council of State for consideration. This means the composition of the Council is pivotal in determining whether constitutional reforms succeed or falter.”
“While we continue to advocate for the abolition of the Council of State as part of broader governance reform, we cannot ignore its current role in shaping constitutional change. Our involvement in this election ensures that the Council will not stand as a roadblock to progress but will instead support the aspirations of the Ghanaian people for a fairer, more accountable system of governance.”
It will therefore be providing backing to leaders committed to justice, equity, and constitutional reform.
