Wesley Girls’ Proprietor Says It Hasn’t Been Officially Notified of Pending Lawsuit

The Methodist Church of Ghana, proprietor of Wesley Girls’ High School (WGHS), has disclosed that it has yet to serve a court notice about a pending lawsuit against the institution.

In a statement, Most Rev’d Prof. Johnson K. Asamoah-Gyadu, the Presiding Bishop and Chairman of the WGHS Board, said they heard of the lawsuit in the media.

“The attention of the Methodist Church Ghana, as proprietor of Wesley Girls’ High School (WGHS), has been drawn through the media to a pending suit in the Supreme Court case Shafic Osman v. The Board of Governors, Attorney-General & Ghana Education Service.”

“…We have not been notified to enable our legal team to take the necessary action to protect the Church’s interests.”

It further disclosed that steps are being taken to obtain the official records of all proceedings.

A suit, filed in December 2024 by private legal practitioner Shafic Osman, invokes the original jurisdiction of the Supreme Court under Articles 21(1)(b) and 130(1)(a) of the 1992 Constitution.

The action challenges the school’s alleged restrictions on Muslim students, including claims that they are barred from wearing the hijab, fasting during Ramadan, and observing other Islamic practices, actions the plaintiffs argue violate constitutional protections for religious freedom.

In court on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, a seven-member panel hearing the case, headed by Justice Gabriel Pwamang, gave the Board of Directors 14 days to respond to allegations made by the plaintiff.
