We’ll Hand over Power if We Lose the Elections- Interior Minister

The Minister of Interior, Henry Quartey, has assured the country of a smooth transition on January 7, 2025, if the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) loses the 2024 General Elections in December.

Speaking to the media on May 16, the Minister said President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had given him the charge to ensure a peaceful election both before and after including seeing to the smooth transition of power if the need arises.

This charge, he stated, will be implemented to the core.

“Mr President has given me a matching order to ensure that this year’s elections before during and after goes on peacefully and that by the grace of God I shall do. Mr President is an astute lawyer. He is a political luminary. This is somebody who has been fighting for democracy to thrive in this country and the world at large.”

“What will profit us as a political party if we encourage violence? Who are we going to serve in this country? Are we going to serve the people that are dead and buried? No. We are to serve the people and the people will decide who they want to serve them.”

Though he said the NPP will be seeking to retain power, this will be guided by the principles of democracy and fair play.

“As a political party, it is our hope, our belief that by the grace of God the good people of this country per the good work that we have done in infrastructure and other works that we have done, will give us another mandate.

“Perish the thoughts, if they decide to give the mandate to somebody else, we will hand over peacefully and walk away. We will go to the drawing board and come back but I know the grace of God abounds and so we shall break the eight.”
