We Will Fight With Our Last Blood To Protect Our Land – Offinso Krontihene

A group in Offinso Old Town has kicked against the selling of land around the Offin River to a private developer named Kwabena.

The group, in a press briefing at Offinso Old Town in the Offinso South District of the Ashanti Region expressed their dissatisfaction about how the land that has been reserved with the sole aim of protecting the river has been sold.

The Krontihene of Offinso Old Town, Nana Owusu Achiaw Birempong said Nananom are not aware of any negotiations concerning the lands.

He indicated that even if the land has been sold to a private developer by the Lands Commission, the developer should go and reclaim his money because they (Offinso) will never allow anybody to develop the land.

Nana Owusu Achiaw emphasized that the land has been purposely reserved by the government to save the Offin River from drying out. He said that Nananom and the youth in the area will fight with their last blood to safeguard the land.

The Krontihene further appealed to the Lands Commission and said the land in question is a catchment area for the Forestry Commission in the Offinso Forest District where they have planted many trees to safeguard the Offin River.

The over 2,000 trees that were planted by the Forestry Commission have been cleared away by the developer who claims to have bought the land from the Lands Commission.

Speaking to Opemsuo News, the Deputy District Manager, Forest Services Division – Offinso Forest District, Moses Kwesi Yalley emphasized that the matter requires a thorough investigation by the Lands Commission as it involves property damage.

The trees were planted this year under the Green Ghana Day initiative by the president.
