We Shouldn’t Accept Insults Against MPs; Haruna Iddrisu on Hardcastle-Dompreh Confrontation

Former National Democratic Congress (NDC) lawmakers leader, Haruna Iddrisu has called for a united stance in the condemnation of the conduct of the acting Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Commission, Emeafa Hardcastle during an altercation with Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh.
The two were embroiled in an altercation during a recess as the Appointments Committee took a breather while vetting Dr. Edward Omane Boamah on January 28.
The incident has been widely circulated on social media with the public divided over it.
In a submission delivered on the floor of Parliament, the Education Minister said such conduct must not be encouraged.
He passed the view that the “honour and dignity of Parliament and more importantly the honour and dignity of our political class” must be protected.
“So to Hon Members, we do not and should not accept that conduct and that insult. Today it’s him, tomorrow it may be you. That is why we must stand united in condemning it.”
He also joined calls for Hardcastle to deliver a public apology and retraction of her words.
“To the Hon Minority Whip, I’m pleading with you, since it’s a woman and you know Ghanaian society and our patriarchal values. Forgive her but before you forgive her, as the leader, Mahama Ayariga said, we should get the affected person to render an unqualified apology to the Minority Whip and follow with a retraction of the story to make matters rest.”
The part of the altercation circulating online captured Hardcastle saying, “You are threatening me that you are taking me on because who are you? What do you mean by taking me on? You are a micro-minority. Doesn’t Afenyo-Markin himself use that phrase? I don’t have time for that. You think you can bully me here?”
Meanwhile, Annoh Dompreh has accused her of labelling him as silly.
