We Need Additional Emergency Unit- Ashanti Health Director
The Ashanti Regional Health Director, Fred Adomako-Boateng, has informed Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, of the need for one additional Emergency Unit to offer emergency health services to residents of the region.
Delivering a summary of a report on the region’s healthcare system after a tour, during a courtesy call on January 24, 2025, he underscored the need for an emergency unit to augment that of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
“All people in need of emergency medical attention need to travel to the KATH to access it. Some lose their lives before they get to the facility. But if we are able to get another one, it will ease pressure on KATH and save lives as well.”
In his report submitted to the Palace, he said he had proposed four suitable health facilities to host the unit.
Maternal Mortality
He said the report also highlighted maternal mortality, which is becoming increasingly alarming in the Region.
According to him, 2023 and 2024 saw high rates. This, he said, required urgent attention and measures to avert.
Staff Accommodation
Another issue of concern, he said, was the lack of accommodation for staff posted to towns like Fomena, Kumawu, Nkenkenso and Amanise West.
The challenge, according to him, is creating scarcity.
“Doctors and nurses posted to these areas are faced with accommodation challenges. As such they all return back to Suntreso, creating periphery staff scarcity. We will need an investor to develop the infrastructure for us.”
Chronic Diseases
Part of his report also highlighted diabetes and cancer as the prevalent chronic diseases in the Region.
“We will need the assistance of Otumfuo to champion education about them,” he pleaded.
Action
The King assured him of immediate actions after perusing the report.
“Indeed I gave him the charge to report to me and he has honoured it. I will engage the needed authorities when I read through and ensure the needed action is taken.”
His Majesty indicated that reporting and updating his Office should be done routinely to keep him informed for the requisite interventions.
Support
Meanwhile, he urged all staff of the Directorate to support the leader in his work.
“When he fails, the failure will be attributed to the entire directorate of which you are part so give him all the support he needs.”
Mr Adomako-Boateng was accompanied to the Manhyia Palace on Friday, January 24, 2025, by the Deputy Finance Director, Mr Vicent Tawiah, Regional Estate Manager, Ebenezer Awuku, Procurement Officer, Mr Vincent Yevu and others.
