USAid Gives Kenya Millions To Tackle Drought

The US development agency says it is giving Kenya more than $255m (£215m) to tackle drought which has left millions of people without secure food supplies.

Speaking in the capital Nairobi the head of USAid, Samantha Power, said the war in Ukraine was increasing suffering in Kenya and the rest of the region.

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) says across East Africa more than 50 million people are facing acute food insecurity.

It says Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan and Sudan are facing food crises with parts of Somalia at risk of famine unless humanitarian assistance is scaled up.

The head of the East African regional group of countries known as Igad, Workneh Gebeyehu, said the food security situation across the Horn of Africa was dire and that the outlook for the next rainy season was also bleak.
