UN Predicts 2022 Food Affordability Crisis May Grow Into Global Food Shortage In 2023
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned the Group of 20 (G20) nations about the looming global food shortage in 2023.
Guterres said the world is on its way to a “raging food catastrophe”, pointing to the fact that five countries are currently faced with famine.
“We are on the way to a raging food catastrophe….People in five separate places are facing famine.”
He predicts that this year’s crisis of affordability may metamorphose into a global food shortage in 2023 unless coordinated action is adopted.
Currently, Ethiopia, Yemen, South Sudan, Somalia, and Afghanistan are facing famine with global food inflation at staggering 135.9 points per data from the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations.
The World Food Program (WFP) reported earlier this year that the world is facing a food crisis of unprecedented proportions, the largest in modern history as a result of conflict, climate shocks and the threat of global recession.
At the just-ended G-20 summit, the world leaders discussed the Russia-Ukraine war, Monetary Policy Rate and Climate Change.
In a tweet at the end of the 2-day summit, Guterres said he sees an indifferent attitude on the part of the world to the looming food crisis.
