Ukraine Invites Ablakwa for Talks After Capturing a Ghanaian Citizen in the Russia War

Ukraine has extended an invitation to Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, following concerns about the detention of a Ghanaian captured in a combat zone as a Russian mercenary.

The visit is expected to take place in February 2026.

In a Facebook post, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrij Sybiha said Ghanaian diplomats will be granted access to prisoners of war upon their request, in accordance with international humanitarian law.

He intimated that Ukraine was ready to hold an extensive discussion in a substantive manner.

“We look forward to engaging with the Ghanaian side in a spirit of friendship and mutual respect.”

“We have noted Ghana’s concerns and request for the return of a Ghanaian citizen who was captured in a combat zone as a Russian mercenary.”

The invitation has since been accepted.

“The Ghanaian Government will continue to prioritise the safety and welfare of all our citizens, regardless of how challenging it might be,” Ablakwa wrote in Facebook post.
