UG Postpones Commencement of New Academic Year

In the face of ongoing labour unrest among some associations, the University of Ghana (UG) has relaxed plans to commence a new academic year.

The 2024/2025 academic year was scheduled to begin on September 26 but in a press statement, the Registrar of the UG said it has been postponed.

“It is announced for the attention of students and other stakeholders that the commencement of the 2024/2025 academic year has been postponed. This is due to the ongoing strike action by various employee groupings.”

A new date is expected to be communicated by the University after this.

That notwithstanding, it said special programmes will proceed as scheduled.

Currently, the Senior Staff Association of the University of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) in public and technical universities and the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) have laid down their tools.

The groups are demanding better conditions of service.

The strike has halted critical administrative services as new entrants struggle to complete essential registration and enrollment procedures.

Administrative tasks such as fee payments, course registrations, medical examinations, and hall accommodations have all been impacted by the industrial action.
