Transport Fares Up By 19% From October 19, Says GPRTU
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced that effective, Saturday 29 October 2022, transport fares are going up by 19%.
“We finally arrived at 19%” Abass Moro, the spokesperson of the GPRTU told Asaase 99.5 Accra on Wednesday. “It takes effect from Saturday 29 October 2022. We’ll sensitise people and our drivers ahead of the take-off date.”
GPRTU arrived at the decision after a crunch meeting with President Nana Akufo-Addo, together with other stakeholders in the transport sector.
The union had wanted to increase fares by 40%.
The union said the increment has been necessitated by the continuous soaring of prices of petroleum products at the various fuel pumps.
Currently, diesel and petrol are selling for over GHC15 and GHC13 respectively at major fuel pumps; a situation transport operators say is eroding their profit.
