Three Chinese, Two Ghanaians Arrested In River Fum Galamsey Clampdown

The police have arrested five suspects in connection with illegal mining activities on the Fum River at Assin Ayitey, a farming community near Assin Akonfudi in Assin North Constituency in the Central Region.

The three Chinese and two Ghanaians were arrested on April 7, 2025, by the Central North Police Regional Command’s Special Anti-Galamsey Taskforce.

The suspects have been identified as Duut Kwabena Sakakba, 38, Douglas Nyamekye, 36, Ma Jinn, 37, Ma Young, 31, and Ma Haibi, 54.

The operation led to the discovery of two excavators with chassis numbers SY MK, X413EA-01-C3 and SWE365E00762 whose operators had bolted with the ignition keys, the police said.

“Efforts are underway to get the Excavators to a holding place. Meanwhile, the owners of the Excavator machines would be traced to face justice as well.”

It also impounded a Toyota Hilux pickup with registration number GE 2743-13, which was also found at the scene.

Meanwhile, the police said the suspects are currently in Police custody and being processed to be put before the law court to face justice.
