Teacher Recruitment: Clear and Deploy Teachers to Only Deprived Districts- Eduwatch to Gov’t

Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) has recommended a strictly guided recruitment and deployment of new teachers as intended by the government.

According to the CSO, the intended deployment must be limited to deprived districts where the country has about 30,000 classrooms without teachers.

The Director General, Kofi Asare, wrote in a Facebook post, “Clearance and deployment must go strictly to deficit districts where teachers are actually needed. District Education Directors must be held accountable for deployment decisions on their quotas.

“For this to work, however, civil society groups like Eduwatch must have access to placement data for real-time monitoring and reporting. If the President shields teacher distribution from political, traditional, and religious influence, we can solve this.”

He believes preference-based postings will only deepen the inequities.

It comes after President John Dramani Mahama announced plans of the government to open the recruitment portal soon, with a policy shift that targets deployment quotas for only teacher-deprived districts.

According to him, teacher surplus urban municipalities, regional capitals, and metropolitan areas will be excluded from the exercise.
