NPP to Amend Constitution

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to amend its constitution.

It comes after the National Council received the report of a Committee that investigated the motivation behind the party’s unprecedented defeat in the 2024 General elections.

A statement issued by the party on April 17 said the submission of the Review Report had invariably necessitated the need for the Party to amend some provisions of the Party Constitution.

This is to enable the party to embrace proposed reforms contained in the Review Committee’s Report as part of the Party’s rebuilding efforts.

In the spirit of this, the party has constituted a nine-member committee to work towards the amendment.

The report of the committee will be reviewed at an Extraordinary National Annual Delegates Conference in July.

“The Party shall hold an Extraordinary National Annual Delegates Conference in the month of July to consider the report of the Constitutional Amendment Committee which shall be tabled before the Conference in the form of amendment motions for approval or otherwise.”

The committee chaired by the Party’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Frank Davies Esq. is also made up of Patricia Appiagyei, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah Esq, Dr. Antoinnette Tsiboe-Danko and Mr. Makafui Woanyah.

Also included are Hon. Ebenezer Nartey, Diana Asonaba Dapaah, Iddris Muhayu-Deen and Dr. Ekua Amoakoh.

The terms of reference of the Amendment Committee shall include assisting the General Secretary in undertaking the following:

A. To identify provisions of the Party Constitution that require amendments to give effect to the recommendations of the Mike Oquaye Election Review Committee.

B. To work on the recommendations of the 2021 Constitutional Review Committee chaired by Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

C. To receive proposals for constitutional amendments from Party members and identifiable groups.

D. To categorize the proposals under various Articles and Clauses for ease of reference:

E. To make appropriate recommendations to guide the debate at the National Annual Delegates Conference.
