The family of the late legendary Ghanaian footballer, Wilberforce Mfum, have formally notified the Life Patron of Asante Kotoko SC, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, about his demise.

The delegation led by the Chairman of the Kotoko Interim Management Committee (IMC) who is also Kontomponiaferehene, Nana Apinkra Akwasi Awua, was given audience at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on May 22, 2025.

The delegation included Nana Kwadwo Gyasi, the CEO of Nana K. Gyasi Company Limited, Stephen Owusu, the Acting Family Head of the Hwediem Ekuona Family, Nana Gyinadu Katakyie II, Otumfuo Kyeame and W.K. Mfum, the eldest son of the deceased.

After Nana Apinkra conveyed the news to the King of the Asante Kingdom, His Majesty gave the family the nod to carry out all the requisite arrangements for the One-Week celebration and Funeral rites.

“Do all the necessary arrangements and communicate them to my office.”

Speaking to Opemsuo Radio on the sidelines, the acting Hwediem Ekuona Family head underscored the essence of the step.

“We put on hold all activities for Mfum’s eventual burial so we come to formally inform Otumfuo as he is the life Patron of the club where he played in his youthful age. We could not overlook this important step to go ahead with the activities.”

Mfum, known as ‘the Bulldozer’, passed away on May 11.

The celebrated player was a member of the 1963 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad, scoring Ghana’s first goal in the tournament and netting twice in the final to help Ghana win their first continental title.

He scored 20 goals in 26 appearances for Ghana and shone in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

Aside from Kotoko, the former Ghana International played for Swedru All Blacks, Baltimore Bays, Ukrainian SC, Ukrainian Nationals, and New York Cosmos.
