NPP’s Remarks Make Judiciary Seem Biased, Says Lawyer

In a recent statement, private legal practitioner and National Democratic Congress’ (NDC)  legal team member, Mr Abraham Amaliba, expressed concerns about the New Patriotic Party (NPP) making the Judiciary appear biased. According to Amaliba, the NPP has already declared James Gyakye Quayson guilty even before any court proceedings began.

“The NPP keeps saying that Quayson will be jailed. The Judiciary should warn them because it is making it seem like they are biased. They have already declared Quayson guilty,” Amaliba emphasized, urging caution in the party’s statements.

In an interview  with Agudey on Nkwantannanso on June 5, he further pointed out that the NPP’s repeated remarks stem from their fear of Quayson winning the upcoming election. He claimed that the NPP is attempting to tarnish Quayson’s reputation through this strategy.

Additionally, he cautioned against drawing comparisons between Quayson’s case and that of Adamu Dramani Sakande. He stressed the significant difference between the two, citing the absence of “intent” in Quayson’s case, as he had already submitted an application to renounce his foreign citizenship.

Despite the ongoing controversy, Amaliba expressed confidence that Quayson will prevail in the election and once again become the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North.

“They know they will lose because Quayson is very popular. He was popular in Assin North even before he became MP. He has helped a lot of people in Assin North. Unlike Kumawu, Assin North is a stronghold of the NDC,” Amaliba asserted.

The Assin North parliamentary seat became vacant after the Supreme Court restrained James Gyakye Quayson on Wednesday, May 17, 2023. The court’s decision followed a legal challenge initiated by Michael Ankomah-Nimfa, a resident of Assin Breku, who questioned Quayson’s eligibility for the MP position due to allegations of dual citizenship.
