We Helped Secure Conviction of Asante Kwaku Berko in US Bribery Case- OSP
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has disclosed that it provided investigation and evidentiary support to the United States in securing the conviction of Asante Kwaku Berko, a dual citizen of Ghana and the United States, for bribery and money laundering offences.
In a public notice dated August 10, 2026, the OSP said it assisted the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) through Ghana’s established mutual legal assistance framework.
The Office said the involvement of the OSP has been acknowledged by the United States Department of Justice as providing “significant assistance to this prosecution”.
The Special Prosecutor described the case as an example of the effectiveness of international cooperation in combating cross-border corruption crimes.
It noted that the collaboration between the FBI and the OSP took place behind the scenes, and the successful outcome underscores the importance of mutual legal assistance between countries.
On August 6, 2026, a federal jury in Brooklyn, New York, convicted Berko on charges of conspiring to pay more than $1 million in bribes between 2014 and 2015 to multiple Ghanaian officials.
The bribes were in connection with the development and financing of a power plant in Ghana under a deal between the Republic of Ghana and Aksa Enerji Uretim A.S., a Turkish energy company and client of Goldman Sachs.
Berko, who is also a former Managing Director of Tema Oil Refinery and former Executive Director in the Investment Banking Division of Goldman Sachs, faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.
Sentencing has been set for November 10, 2026.
