Suspicious Aircraft: We Need Satisfactory Explanation- NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is demanding a satisfactory explanation from the government on the reason for the entry of two aircraft into the country last month.

A statement issued by the Director for Communication, Richard Ahiagbah, said the explanations offered by the government were “scanty and primarily defensive”.

Instead of clearing all suspicions, the NPP finds the explanation to be rather “deepening public suspicion and concern”.

“The story about the two jets is baffling, and the idea that the government will politicize citizens’ legitimate desire to know that the aircraft was not on an illegal mission reinforces the suspicion that the government’s explanation is contrived.”

On the back of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime’s call for an investigation into the flights’ mission, the opposition party is demanding what it calls a “detailed {and} professional” probe.

The NPP is also demanding an update on the status of the US$350 million cocaine bust in Cape Coast and the US$I50 million cocaine seizure in Sekondi.

“The political explanation Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu offered failed to address the request for an update on these drug arrests. The silence on these high-profile arrests undermines public trust, particularly given the alleged involvement of a senior member of the NDC.”

Meanwhile, it cautioned the government about attempts to trivialize the issues, noting that they are matters of international interest with Ghana’s credibility and compliance with international obligations at stake.

“The international community is observing closely, and Ghana cannot afford the perception of complicity or institutional failure in confronting transnational crime because of the intolerance and lack of openness of the John Mahama administration.”
