Stop “Instant Justice”; Prisons Service after Kasoa Lynched its Officer

The Ghana Prisons Service has condemned the public’s seeming acceptance of mob justice, popularly known as “instant justice” after their officer fell victim to the menace.

The officer identified as Lance Corporal Gideon Adu Boakye was stationed at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

He was allegedly mistaken for a thief at Kasoa Iron City on September 29, 2024, after he had sought permission to visit his relatives there. Adu Boakye was allegedly lynched by a group of residents.

So far, six persons including four women and two men are standing trial over the incident.

In a press statement on October 7, the Service urged the public to use the appropriate channels in addressing their concerns.

“The Service wishes to caution the general public against the use of ‘Instant Justice’ in dealing with suspects but to resort to the Police to avoid harming and killing of innocent individuals.”

It also served notice about its readiness to collaborate with the police to bring the perpetuators to book.

“The Prisons Administration is collaborating with the Police to unravel the circumstances that led to the gruesome murder of the officer. The leadership of the Prisons Service is committed to ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to book.”

Meanwhile, it extended condolences to the bereaved family.

“The entire Service commiserates with the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased officer and urges all officers to remain calm as steps are being taken to ensure that justice is served.”
