Sports Ministry Launches Sports Fund at Inauguration of Governing Board

Ghana has inaugurated a Governing Board of the Ghana Sports Fund, a move aimed at transforming how sports are funded nationwide.
Delivering remarks at the ceremony on January 23, 2026, Sports Minister Kofi Iddie Adams said the moment marks the beginning of a new chapter characterised by transparency, accountability, and strategic investment.
He highlighted that the fact that calls for a reliable funding mechanism to support athletes, federations, and infrastructure were slowly becoming a reality.
“The Ghana Sports Fund is designed to change how sport is financed and how opportunity is distributed,” Adams stated.
“Funding has long been uneven and unpredictable. This Fund will mobilise resources transparently for athlete development, grassroots sports, infrastructure, and capacity building. It introduces planning where there was uncertainty, equity where there was imbalance, and accountability where there was discretion.”
The initiative was conceived from years of advocacy and policy discussions; birthed into a Cabinet Memorandum; advanced by parliamentary approval of the Sports Fund Bill, and; then culminated in the formalisation of the Act 1159 with Presidential Assent.
The Minister underscored that while the Fund is a critical tool, leadership, governance, and discipline are equally vital.
“The Governing Board carries a significant responsibility. Your decisions must reflect fairness, transparency, and strategic thinking. This Fund must serve sport, not interests. It must reward performance, not proximity,” he urged.
He also called on federations and athletes to embrace the new system, emphasising that structured proposals, clear programs, and measurable outcomes are essential for success. “If we get this right, young people will see sport as a viable pathway, and Ghana’s presence on the continental and global stage will grow stronger,” Adams added.
The constituted Governing Board bear the responsibility of ensuring that the Fund is managed effectively, with integrity and in the best interest of Ghanaian sport.
