Sports Minister Confirms World Cup Budget Will Be Made Public

Kofi Iddie Adams, a member of Parliament for Buem Constituency and Minister of Sports and Recreation, has confirmed the President’s desire to make the national teams’ budget public.
The Black Stars of Ghana will compete in Group L, which comprises the Three Lions of England, the Blazers of Croatia, and the Red Tide of Panama at the upcoming FIFA football championship in June 2026.
The Ministry of Sports and Recreation, which got the renaming under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, benefited from an improved amount during the last budget statement dubbed, “Resetting for growth, jobs and Economic Transformation”.
The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, on Thursday, November 13, 2025, stated, “An amount of GH ₵150 Million has been allocated for the Black Stars to participate in the World Cup.”
The President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, paid a visit to Ghana’s Parliament on Thursday, February 27, 2025, to deliver a State of the Nation Address (SONA), implying that the budget for all sports national teams would not be kept secret.
“There will be no secrecy in how much the government spends on the national teams. The budgets presented by the FA and other sports associations must be made known to the public. After all, it is the taxpayer’s funds that are used to fund these activities,” the President hinted.
Mr Kofi Adams, in an interview with Asempa FM on Wednesday morning, echoed the President’s comments on the propagation of the Black Stars budget ahead of the World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Kofi Adams repeated, “We will make the World Cup budget public, nothing will be hidden. The government doesn’t intend to profit; this is about giving Ghana what it deserves. The funds we will raise will determine the number of fans we will take to the World Cup.”
He stressed the government’s aspiration to send supporters to the World Cup, explaining that the policy direction is now clear, that Ghana should be represented by its fans at the tournament.
“The policy that we send supporters to the World Cup is clear. It is clear that we should work at it and that is why we have set up a fundraising committee.”
