Revoke The Over 2000 Mining Licences Issued By Akufo-Addo Govt; Barker to Mahama
Social activist, Oliver Barker-Vormorwor has urged President John Dramani Mahama to revoke the over 2000 mining licences that were issued to small-scale miners during the regime of the immediate past President.
He alleges that the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government issued 103 licences after they lost the 2024 Presidential election.
The activities of these recipients, he indicated were threatening the environment.
In a Facebook post, he wrote, “The disaster of Nana Addo’s Regime, the worst this country has ever seen, manages to issue over 2000 mining licenses to cronies in 4 years. Including 103 after they lose the election. Creating an ecological clusterfuck for this Generation and the next. And we sit down and watch?”
“The President must revoke all those licences and put a moratorium on new licenses. If we can burn excavators we can revoke licenses. Time for a major RESET in our relationship with the Environment.”
Edging closer to his administration, the Akufo-Addo government was accused of administering 1,400 licences to small-scale miners in his tenure.
Stakeholders Referencing data from IUCN, he said this is in worrying contrast to the 150 licences that were issued between 1988 and 2022.
However, the government at the time disputed the figures, stating that 1,402 small-scale mining licences had been issued as of 2016, while 984 had been issued under their administration.
