Quayson Sworn In As Assin North MP
James Gyakye Quayson is now constitutionally recognized as the representative of the Assin North Constituency in Parliament.
He was sworn into office by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Bagbin on Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at the plenary.
Quayson contested the by-election after he was ousted from office through a Supreme Court ruling that rendered his election in 2020 null and void. It said he had not renounced his Canadian citizenship when he filed to be elected and subsequently got elected as an MP.
He was contested in the by-election by New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Charles Opoku and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG)’s Bernice Enyonam Sefenu.
Certified results after the June 27 By-election showed the NPP polled 11,389 (42%); LPG – 85 (0.28%) and NDC – 17,205 (57.4%).
A day to his swearing in, the National Communication Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, alleged some people attempted to bribe Quayson to back out of the by-election.
“Folks, not much has been said about the relentlessness of the MP-elect for Assin North, without which victory may have eluded us. They tried to bribe him to back off.”
He said when the attempt failed, the same people threatened him with jail.
“When they failed, they threatened him with jail. But in all these things, he was unwavering in his commitment and love for his people.
Quayson is currently standing trial for perjury and forgery.
