Prof Atuguba Seeks Asantehene’s Support for New UG Law School Construction
The Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, Prof Raymond Atuguba has sought the assistance of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in completing an ultramodern and multi-purpose Law School under construction in the country.
The state-of-the-art facility in the Greater Accra Region will house a 1,500-seat auditorium, two additional 1,000-seat lecture halls, four 250-capacity lecture rooms, eight 125-seat lecture rooms, sixteen 65-seat rooms, and fourteen Ph.D. rooms.
It will also accommodate 500-seat and 200-seat moot courts, along with an administrative structure upon completion.
During a courtesy call on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, Prof Atuguba briefed the King about the project.
“We also wanted to give Otumfuo information about a project we are working on. When you go around the world, you see many law schools and in Ghana it looks like our law schools are small.
“So together we started a project to build a Law School that is befitting of our country. We’ve had a lot of support for the project so far. It’s not now we are starting. We started four years ago and by God’s grace, the structure is coming up. So first we wanted to inform Otumfuo about it and also to ask him to think about us when he is administering his education fund.”
He also announced intention to name part of the building after His Majesty.
“We would like it very much if we are able to name part of the school in his honour especially at the occasion of his 25th Anniversary.”
Willings
The Asantehene eagerly endorsed the project and readily welcomed the request for his assistance.
“I want to assure them that I am more supportive of what they are doing. I will speak to Nana Hiahene (Chairman of the Board of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation) to see the nature of the project you are doing and see how best we can contribute to support it. I want to assure you that I will do everything possible to be able to help you advance it.”
His Majesty made indications of his highest regard for the legal education with some contributions he has made towards such including bestowing a tract of land to the Ghana School of Law for a campus in the Ashanti Region.
Among the delegation were Professor Christine Dowuona-Hammond, Professor Kwame Gyan, Dr. Abdallah Ali-Nakyea, Mr. Kwame Awadzie, Mr. Clement Addo and Ms. Obaatampa Asaah-Aboagye.
