Prisoners To Produce Sanitary Pads, School Desks and Uniforms

The Minister of Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has announced plans to utilize inmates in the production and supply of essential materials for the educational sector.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on July 14, 2025, he said up to 20% of sanitary pads distributed under the Free Sanitary Pad initiative will be produced by the Ghana Prisons Service.
In addition to that, he said 30% of school desks and school uniforms will be produced by inmates.
“Minister for the Interior announces at Government Accountability Series that up to 20% of sanitary pads distributed under the Free Sanitary Pad initiative will be produced in Ghana’s prisons. They will also produce 30% of school desks and school uniforms,” the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu highlighted.
President John Dramani Mahama launched the Free Sanitary Pad Distribution Programme in April in the spirit of gender equality and to improve school attendance among girls.
It is envisioned to ensure menstrual dignity and support the education of vulnerable girls.
Under the initiative, free sanitary pads will be given to girls from Primary 5 through senior high school nationwide.
