Prempeh I Exile Return: Seychelles President Arrives For Centenary Celebration

The President of Seychelles, H.E. Wavel Ramkalawan, has arrived in Ghana for the 100th Anniversary of the return of Sir Agyemang Prempeh I from an exile in Seychelles in 1924.

The Guest of Honour for the celebration will be in Kumasi for a Symposium on November 22, a durbar on November 23 and a Thanksgiving Service on November 24.

He will officiate the Thanksgiving Service at the St Cyprians Anglican Church at 9 am, the Manhyia Palace has announced.

H.E Ramkalawan arrived in Ghana on November 20 together with his wife. They will leave the country on Monday after the three-day event is over.

He is not the only high profile personality attending the event. The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will host Prime Minister of Eswatini, Russell Mmiso Dlamini.

President Akufo-Addo will also be present at the durbar on Saturday.

Sir Osei Agyemang Prempeh I was exiled to Seychelles in 1900 on the back of his resistance to colonial rule when he gave himself up to save Asanteman from another war few years after the ravages of the 1874 Sagrenti War.

He spent 28 years in exile which included a year at Elmina Castle, three years in Sierra Leone and 24 in Seychelles.

This year marks exactly a centenary since the “saviour” of Asanteman returned from exile, a very significant historic event in the annals of the Kingdom.
