Portion of Blazing Accra Zongo Lane Structure Collapses

The eastern part of the affected structure at the Accra Zongo Lane which has been in flames since the weekend has collapsed.

This was confirmed in a statement by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) as the firefighting effort enters day three.

It confirmed however that no injury was recorded with efforts steadily persisting to extinguish the flames.

“Fortunately, No firefighter nor civilian casualties recorded. Efforts underway to fully douse the protracted fire.”

Background
The fire started around 9 am on Sunday, September 1, 2024.

The officers tried to no avail to overcome the fire that affected multiple shops and warehouses due to challenges including inaccessibility to shops and warehouses, heavy fuel load and closeness of structures.

A statement by the Service on Sunday evening read, “The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded swiftly after receiving the distress fire call at 10:06 am, with the first pump from the Ministry Fire Station arriving at 10:16 am.”

It said 10 fire appliances, including a Turntable Ladder and water tanker, were deployed to battle the blaze.

Though they succeeded at containing the flames, efforts to totally extinguish it were unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, the Service announced no injury was recorded.
