Polling Agents should be Knowledgeable not Fighters – EC Boss
Mr. Benjamin Banor-Bio, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), has emphasised the significance of political parties appointing knowledgeable polling agents ahead of the Kumawu elections.
“Polling agents should be those who are knowledgeable and not just those with physical strength,” he said.
According to Mr. Banor-Bio, the primary responsibility of polling agents is to closely monitor elections and ensure the accurate collation of results.
In an interview with Agudey on Nkwantannanso on May 22, he stressed the importance of agents ensuring the correct signing of declaration of result forms and verifying the accuracy of the results stated.
“They must not just sign the declaration of results form but also keep a copy for reference,” he said.
“After completing their duties at the polling station, agents are required to proceed to the collation centre where the total votes will be tallied.”
He highlighted the crucial role of polling agents at this stage, stating, “When polling agents don’t their your job well at the polling station and the results reach the collation centre, I cannot do much. The form they signed is what I will use to declare results. That is the basic document used to declare results.”
“The EC work is transparent and verifiable.”
In emphasising the transparency and verifiability of the Electoral Commission’s work, Mr. Banor-Bio urged all polling agents to diligently perform their responsibilities.
By ensuring knowledgeable and competent agents, political parties can contribute to the integrity of the electoral process and uphold the accuracy of the final results.
The statement from Mr. Benjamin Banor-Bio serves as a reminder to political parties of the vital role played by polling agents in maintaining the credibility of elections, reinforcing the importance of their expertise and diligence in ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process.
