Police Officer Allegedly Murders Man over Transport Fare
A police officer working on a part-time basis as a ride-hailing driver has allegedly shot and killed a passenger over a disagreement on transportation charges.
The incident occurred on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at Koans Estate near Kuntunse in the Greater Accra Region.
Identified as General Constable Smith Gyeke, he is alleged to have shot the passenger identified as Stanley Ahadzi over a “disputed fare”.
A statement released by the Ghana Police Service confirmed his arrest on Monday, adding that he is assisting in investigations.
“The Police have arrested a ride-hailing driver, who was later identified as an off-duty Police officer, for allegedly shooting a male adult at Koans Estate near Kuntunse in Accra on Sunday, 18th August 2024.”
The remains of the victim have since been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akufo Dampare has also reached out to the deceased’s family, the statement noted.
It added, “Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) have visited the family of the deceased to commiserate with them and assured them that the incident will be fully investigated and the officer involved will be made to face justice.
“A Police clinical psychologist and other officers have been assigned to the family to support them through this difficult time. Once again, we would like to assure the public, especially the family, that justice will be served.”
