Plastic Manufacturers Cancel Excise Tax Demo
Plastic manufacturers have announced they have suspended their planned demonstration against the imposition of the 5% Excise Tax on locally manufactured plastic products.
The decision is based on “good faith” shown by the Ministry of Trade and Industry during an engagement last week, the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association, the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers and the Plastic Sellers Association of Ghana said in a joint statement.
The groups last week served notice to the Police Service about plans to embark on a protest in the country’s capital city on July 10 and halt production; however, in its recent statement it explained that the Deputy Minister had given them assurances of a favourable response.
“The Hon Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Hon Michael Okyere Baafi has shown good faith and has assured us that he will facilitate further engagements and dialogues with the government and also immediately trigger the necessary mechanisms and procedures to stop the implementation of the 5% Excise tax.”
The meeting took place on Friday, July 5, 2024.
