Our Citizens Must Feel ECOWAS As a Living Community- Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has mounted an advocacy to bring the full potential of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to the doorstep of all citizens of the 15 states.
According to him, the bloc Community must serve the needs of the people.
Speaking at the launch of the 50th Anniversary of ECOWAS on April 22, 2025, the President of Ghana said the perception that ECOWAS is a distant community must be eradicated.
“We must empower ECOWAS institutions to act swiftly, credibly and transparently. Our citizens must feel that ECOWAS is not some distant bureaucracy but a living community that understands their struggles and champions their hopes.”
He also spoke of diplomacy’s role in this regard.
“I have a commitment to integration that the diplomacy must extend to economic, social and cultural dimensions whether we are harmonising trade negotiations, facilitating free movements of our people, or championing education cooperation, our diplomatic instrument must always work in the service of our people.”
