Offices Remain Closed as Senior Staff Strike takes effect at UCC
The University of Cape Coast Branch of the Senior Staff Association has declared an indefinite strike over what it describes as ill practices meted out to its members by the University’s Management. The group is asking for the promotion of senior staff, appointment to senior membership, career progression, and payment of negotiated allowances among others.
As a result of the strike, all offices remain closed on campus, and the strike is beginning to bite hard. The Chairman of the Senior Staff Association, Sandy Kumi Sinatra, says that the National Labour Commission (NLC) has summoned them and the university management this morning in an attempt to resolve the impasse.
The University’s senior staff has been calling on management to address their concerns since December 2021, but their requests have not been met. The senior staff have accused the University management of failing to implement the agreement reached between them and the university administration in November 2021.
Meanwhile, the national leadership of the association says it will not hesitate to declare a strike in solidarity with its colleagues at the University of Cape Coast if their grievances are not addressed. The strike has already affected academic and administrative activities, with some students expressing their frustration over the closure of offices and the delay in the release of their results.
