Obuasi: AngloGold Ashanti Builds School for Sanso

The AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine in partial fulfilment of its 10-Year Socio Economic Development Plan, has commissioned an ultramodern fully furnished Primary and Junior High School (JHS) for the Sanso community in the Obuasi Municipality.

The Sanso Methodist Primary and JHS is a 9 unit classroom block equipped with all the necessary facilities that complement effective teaching and learning. The facilities include a modern library, computer laboratory, canteen, teachers’ common room, kitchen, and modern washrooms at the cost of GHC4.8m.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Community Relations Manager, Mr. Emmanuel Baidoo, said the delivery of the facility is a testament to their long term commitment to an improved education standard in mining communities.

“This remarkable education facility stands as a testament to our long term commitment to improving quality education within the communities in which we operate.”

According to Mr. Baidoo, “AngloGold Ashanti has since the launch of the 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan implemented various initiatives under the Basic Education Improvement Program in collaboration with the Municipal Assemblies and their Education Directorates in Obuasi”.

He mentioned, “The interventions include bi-annual Instructional Leadership Training for Basic School Teachers. To date, the program has benefited over 500 teachers, equipping them with leadership skills and innovative approaches for effective teaching delivery.”

The Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Elijah Adansi Bonah, thanked the leadership of the Adubiase Traditional Area for securing the land for the monumental project.

He disclosed that the “Obuasi Municipal Assembly has benefited immensely from the AngloGold Ashanti’s 10-Year Socio Economic Development Plan” following the revival of the company by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo.

On his part, Member of Parliament for Obuasi West, Hon. Kwaku Kwarteng was particularly concerned about the maintenance of the facility and hence called on the school authority, parents, students and the community to ensure periodic maintenance of the facility.

The ceremony was graced by the Deputy Education Minister and MP for Assin South, Hon John Ntim Fordjour, the Queen Mother of Adubiasi Traditional Area, Nana Akua Dwum II, Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Dr. William Amankrah Appiah, traditional leaders, and representatives of the Heads of Senior High Schools, staff of AngloGold Ashanti, teachers and students of the Sanso Methodist Primary and JHS among others.
