NPP Sets Date For Presidential Primary

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set January 31, 2026, to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 Presidential Elections.
The decision was taken at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
Announcing the decision at a press conference, the General Secretary of the opposition party, Justin Kodua Frimpong, said the move does not require an amendment of the party’s constitution.
“The Committee also spoke about the time for our presidential primaries. And again, the Committee agrees that that decision does not warrant amendment of our Constitution.
“And the National Council today also made the decision that the date for our presidential primaries is set for January 31, 2026. That will be the date that we shall hold our presidential primaries.”
Some bigwigs of the party have long shown interest in leading the party back to power after the woeful defeat in the last election.
Among them include former vice President and 2024 flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former lawmaker Kennedy Agyapong, and former Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.
In a statement three weeks ago, Bryan said his decision was in response to growing encouragement from a broad spectrum of party faithful and extensive consultation with his family and well-wishers.
He asserted his “lifelong” service to the NPP and opined that these roles and experiences have granted him invaluable insights into the sacrifices, dedication, and strategic vision required to build and sustain the foundations of the party.
Ken, on the other hand, has been relentless in his destructive criticism, calling the 2024 flagbearer a questionable pick.
He believes he has paid his dues to the NPP, warranting his consideration for the presidency.
