NPP on Path to Recovery, Says Bantama MP as Party Prepares for Flagbearer Election

Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, Member of Parliament for Bantama, says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is actively reorganising following its recent electoral defeat, highlighting efforts to rebuild structures and prepare for future contests.
Speaking in an interview on Opemsuo Radio’s Nkwantannanso program with Kofi Boakye, he explained that the party set up an Election Review Committee to assess the reasons behind the loss and has since undertaken several restructuring initiatives.
“One major decision was to elect our flagbearer early, which is why the party is holding its flagbearer election on the 31st. In essence, the party is currently reorganising, selecting leaders, rebuilding structures, and positioning itself for the future,” he said.
Hon. Asenso-Boakye stressed that political parties must learn from both victories and defeats.
“When you win, you govern and work to improve lives. When you lose, you learn from the experience and reorganise. I believe the party is on the right track, and once a flagbearer is elected, he will provide the needed direction for the party going forward,” he added.
He further cited low voter turnout in the Ashanti Region and other traditional strongholds of the NPP, attributing it in part to misunderstandings over incentives during primaries. Some voters reportedly demanded money, confusing transportation support offered during primaries with direct vote-buying.
“Many of these individuals are not card-bearing party members but sympathisers, and they form a significant portion of the electorate. Given the economic challenges in Ghana and many developing African countries, small incentives can be very influential,” he noted.
According to the MP, the turnout issues impacted election results, though many who did not vote have since expressed regret, especially as development projects, including road infrastructure, have slowed or halted in the Ashanti Region following the party’s (NPP) loss.
