Nobody Should Call Us “Micro Minority Caucus”- Afenyo Markin

The Minority leader in Parliament, Hon Alexander Afenyo Markin has warned his counterparts on the other side against referring to his side as a “micro minority caucus”.

He asserts that there is no official recognition of that tag, affirming that they are the Minority caucus.

“We are the official minority and there can’t be any other description and it shouldn’t be used by anybody on the floor of this House. You can’t use the term micro minority, not only Mr Speaker. Nobody should use that term in this House,” he objected on January 8, 2025.

The Speaker, R Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin agreed with the leader that the tag was not official and should not reflect in the records of the House.

“The minority leader on behalf of the minority caucus has objected to my describing their caucus as a micro minority caucus. This is a term that is not new to the House. He is totally right.”

“The objection is to the fact that it should not be formally so recognised by the records of Parliament. I agree with you,” he said.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in the House assumed the minority status after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) swept most of the seats in the 2024 Parliamentary election.

They now hold 88 seats in the House while the NDC holds 183 with four independent MPs.
