No Sign Of Addison Resignation As NDC Ultimatum Ends
There is no sign the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Ernest Addison and his deputies will resign from their various positions following a demand by the country’s largest opposition political party earlier this month.
Addison was on August 8 handed down a 21-day ultimatum by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to resign with his deputies with accusations that the top officials, particularly, the Governor had illegally printed about GH¢ 80 billion between 2021 and 2022 which it says contributed to a peaking inflation rate of 54.1% in December 2022.
The demand also came in the wake of the GHC 60.8 billion loss posted by the Central Bank in its 2022 Annual Report and Financial Statements.
They threatened to occupy the BoG headquarters in protest if they failed to honourably step down.
“The March to Ensure Accountability will begin in 21 days if the Governor of the Bank of Ghana does not do the needful and pack bag and baggage out of that sacred institution that he has so desecrated. Dr Ernest Addisson Must Go! There has to be an end to impunity and it is NOW!” Minority Leader in Parliament, Cassiel Ato Forson said during a press conference.
According to the opposition party, their plan is meant to “save the Bank of Ghana”.
“We are resolved to embark on popular action to occupy the Central Bank and drive out the team of inept, callous and criminal mismanagers of the finances of this country and save the Bank of Ghana.”
Today, August 29, 2023, marks the end of the countdown but there is no sign that they will kowtow to the demand.
The NDC has scheduled September 5 for the protest which will begin at Parliament through to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light – Ministry of Finance – High Court Complex – Kinbu – Makola – Rawlings Park to Opera Square and the Bank of Ghana to present their petition.
Meanwhile, their route for the protest has been opposed by the police after the mandatory notification.
